Decision pattern
Resource Allocation
Resource allocation chooses how limited people, budget, equipment, or capacity are distributed across competing requests to maximize an agreed measure of value.
Use this when
Teams often allocate resources by first-come-first-served rules even when capacity, priority, value, and hard constraints point to a better plan.
Inputs
available capacity, request demand, value or priority, deadlines and minimum commitments.
Constraints
Total resource capacity, Minimum commitments, Priority rules, Deadline feasibility, Mutually exclusive choices.
Decision output
allocation plan, unassigned or partial requests, capacity utilization, trade-off explanation.
A small example
A planner fills allocations by judgment and later discovers that high-priority work was starved by earlier requests. The decision process makes the rules explicit, then compares feasible options against the stated objective: Maximize value delivered while respecting capacity and priority constraints.
| Request | Resource | Demand | Value | Priority | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Project A | Analyst hours | 40 | High | 1 | Friday |
| Project B | Analyst hours | 25 | Medium | 2 | Monday |
| Project C | Equipment | 2 | High | 1 | Wednesday |
